Map of Maine, circa 1840

 Collection
Identifier: MCC-00490

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of one small historical black and white map of Maine engraved by G. W. Boynton. The author of the map is unknown and it appears this map was taken out of a book but research did not bring any results. This map covers the state of Maine with its counties, major cities from Central to Southern Maine, its rivers, and shows the St. John Valley region as the Madawaska Settlement. (Distinct communities, villages and settlements were in existence in this region but the 1830 Census lumped them together into what was called the "Madawaska Settlement.) The population number on the 1840 Maine Census shows the same population number indicated on this map. Aroostook County was founded in 1839 and Aroostook appears as a county on this map so we assume the map is from circa 1840. The map is in good condition with some foxing.

Biographical

G. W. (George Washington) Boynton ( - 1884) was a Boston based cartographer and map engraver active in the first half of the 19th century. Boynton engraved and compiled maps for numerous publishers including Thomas Bradford, Nathaniel Dearborn, Daniel Adams, and S. G. Goodrich. His most significant work is likely his engraving of various maps for Bradford’s National Atlas. He also engraved for the Boston Almanac. In 1835 Boynton is listed as an employee of the Boston Bewick Company, an engraving, stereotype, and printing concern based at Boston. Little else is known of his life.
